We've been talking to our Installation Manager Brian Sayers who has been installing AUTOPA products for over 48 years. Here are his answers to some of our most frequently asked installation questions.
How deep should I dig my foundations?
It depends on what you are installing and where. There are a few rules of thumb that can be followed though.
- For a ragged installation on a smaller product, like a fixed post, then a 300mm3 foundation will be fine.
- A ragged installation on a larger product, like a cycle shelter, will need a hole of 300mm2 around the leg, and a minimum of 400mm deep.
- If you’re laying a slab for a flanged installation then the slab needs to be 300mm2 larger than the product, and a minimum of 150mm deep
Are there any specific foundations I should use?
It depends on what you are installing and where. There are a few rules of thumb that can be followed though.
What installation technique is best for my site: ragged or flanged?
Again, it depends on the site. Ragged installation is permanent, whilst flanged products can be removed if necessary. Ragged installation is more cost effective, but might not be suitable for every site.
What’s best for my site; galvanised or stainless steel?
Where is the site? If your site is within 7 miles of the coast then grade 316 stainless steel is the only material you should use as so it won’t be affected by the salt air. All other materials will rust and corrode. The salt in the air can cause staining, so clean it regularly with warm soapy water.
Otherwise the choice of material is up to the customer. Stainless steel is usually preferred for visual impact, but it will require regular cleaning to keep it looking shiny. Galvanised steel doesn’t require any cleaning or upkeep. Once it’s in you can leave it be.
